10120 Imperial Flagship. What type of ship?

Postby legokilt on Thu Jan 14, 2010 5:06 pm

I just had a thought and felt I should share it. What type of ship do you think the Imperial Flagship is? Her lack of guns and diminutive size (relatively) :D mean she isn't anything bigger than a sixth rate but is she a sloop, a schooner, what? If she had 20 guns she could be a sloop of war or a diminutive frigate. Please give any ideas you may have.

Legokilt, I've moved this to the Pirate Life subforum. Though you mention an actual set, i'm sure any possible discussion regarding it's real-world counterpart would be better suited here rather than in the Sets forum. :)

My guess is LEGO intented her to represent a Fully-Rigged Ship (Click Here). However, in the real-world, my best guess would be a Sloop-of-War. Similar, the Black Seas Barracuda would represent a Brig, but would fall under the Sloop-of-war type due to size.

I think Captain Ironheart got it nailed. With Lego ships (At least the official sets) the amount of cannons generally do not relate to the style of ship, especially witgh the larger ones.

None of the official ships can be related to real ships according by the cannons I think.
A difficult question, I have the Skulls Eye Schooner and though it sais "schooner" I think it's closer to a different type because of the large cabin and the masts-sail construction matches those of a galleon better

As before, the 'Skulls Eye Schooner' can be judged in two ways. going by the sail plan, i would consider it a Barque (see the site i linked above). However, real-world would again use the Sloop-of-war catagory also due to the size of the ship.

Personally, i've been going by the sail-plans (ex. calling Barracuda a brig). Since most LEGO sets are scaled for mini-figures, NOT real-world, it feels better to classify these ships by their sail-plans. Otherwise, for a real-world-sized pirate ship, it would be massive and VERY expensive! but to each his own.
