Isla de Muerta

Postby nanuck95 on Sat Apr 23, 2011 9:31 pm

I made a trip to DC this weekend and picked up Isla de Muerta. I was pretty happy with it, as Chris mentioned with the other PotC sets, the build isn't anything spectacular, but the figs are pretty nice. I especially like the Barbossa figure, and the new skeleton parts. I was slightly disappointed with the gold coins and gold bars as they are the pearl-gold color, and not the chrome gold like the other Lego coins.

Has anybody else picked this up yet? I really like the figures, but I noticed on my Elizabeth Swan figure that the printing from the torso and the lower half of the dress don't match up. It's not horrible, but it's slightly distracting. Anybody else run into the same thing? Just wondering if I have a 1-off that's messed up, or if they're all like that.

Posted the picture to Flickr if you want to take a look.

I just built this set last night. I do like the build. It was fun. I do like the parts in this set very much. I was also annoyed that the gold is not chromed, but I think it gives some variety to your gold..and probably could be good filler. Other than that...I guess if you are a customizer, you could always get some gold leaf or some chrome model paint for them. I liked this set so much that I got two of them.

I just checked my Elizabeth and the middle line is off as well, looks to only be only about half a line off compared to where yours looks about a full line off but it still doesn't quite match up. And about the gold, if you look at the front cover of the box it shows the gold as the shiny gold parts and that's not what they are especially if you look at the gold bar right below Hectors sword and compare it to the gold stud next to it. I mean if there going to show it as that then that should be whats in the box eh....

But overall I've been quite impressed with the new sets. The only one I was disappointed with is The Queen Anne's Revenge. And the main reason for that was because the build doesn't have alot of reinforcement and several sections just fall apart with barely any pressure. Don't get me wrong i still think its a great set but if your going to do anything other than display it (as in let the 5 year old that built it play pirates) then it could use some extra battening down of the hatches so to say. :arr

The printing on my figure also does not line up. This set has very useful parts and figures. It is a shame that the box art has chrome gold bars and new coins while the actual set only has pearl gold elements.

The ambassadors have been talking about the pearl gold vs chrome thing, as it is highly annoying. Personally, it really bothers me, since I vastly prefer the chrome gold bits. Also, I can't say I'm a huge fan of the new coins, but they're not too much of an issue, considering how many of the olds I have. I just really wish they were chrome. The pearl gold is so hideous. I did go ahead and buy the set, though, because they were BOGO 50% off at TRU. As for Miss Swan's dress printing, after reading this I took a look at mine, and I suppose it's a wee bit off, but it's certainly within what I would consider an acceptable range.

That's funny actually because the printing on your fig is off in the opposite direction as mine. Mine is slightly worse I think, like I said it's not horrible, but the gaps in the gold lining are much more defined. I haven't decided if I am going to complain to customer service or not yet, I was kind of waiting to see how many other people are having issues if it's worth getting a replacement, or if I'm just going to run into the same thing with replacement parts. I'm kind of leaning towards just sucking it up at this point as it looks like it will be hit-or-miss if I'll get one that actually matches.

I have reported this issue with Elizabeth in the LA forum. Hopefully we will get some feedback.

I got my copy of Isla de Muerta the first day my local Toys'R'Us had them in stock. I don't normally shop there, but since it was on sale and no one else had any PotC sets I picks some up. I was thoroughly impressed with the set. The figs are beautiful! Unfortunately, my Swan fig's decals didn't match up right, but thats not a big deal. However like most people I was very disappointed that the new gold bars where pearl gold instead of chrome gold, like it showed on the box. I couldn't believe Lego had acted so deceitful! Over all I still really like the set and plan on buying more PotC sets.

Yes! I love pearl gold. None of that chrome nonsense for me, thank you very much. :D
Shame about the printing- it would be one thing if it were uncommon, but it sounds fairly consistent... not cool!
Looks like a nice set though.

Three things really bother me about the gold coins:

1. First the number is low relief. The old number protruded more from the face of the coin.
2. Next the coin has two ugly injection mold points on it. Couldn't these have been designed on the side of the element instead?
3. Finally there is only one denomination and it does not match the denomination on the box.

My guess is these coins were produced in China on their own sprue.
