The Anatomy of a Pirate Vessel

Postby DARKspawn on Thu Aug 21, 2008 6:56 pm

While building a pirate ship I came across a problem, I didn't know what all the parts of the pirate ship were called. I was familiar enough with the LEGO pirate ships that I could easily reproduce one, but I kept refering to elements of the vessel as "this bit" or "that thing" and found I was unfamiliar with some of the functions of a sailing ship. Of course, it was google to the rescue. I thought it would be useful to share some of my findings with you. Please feel free to add relevant links to this thread :)

Hope this helps someone building a ship out there :)

Yar! I suddenly realized why all of my ships look a bit... off. The quarterdeck is too high, and the main deck is too low! DARKspawn, you've shivered me timbers! I'll have to correct this over the weekend.

A couple of years ago when I was buying piratey type LEGO parts I went looking for reference books. Honestly, the best ones I found were in the children's section at Chapters. Most of them had cartoony drawings which IMHO, serves a LEGO builder very well. Check it out next time your near your local bookstore but keep in mind that when I was looking PotC II & III were full on so maybe there won't be quite as many as there were then. Don't forget the discount tables etc.

If this ship has a 'girl's side' and a 'boy's side' we must be listing badly!!
