The End of the World
Aaron 27 VIII 08

Cove member Daniel Z., aka DNL, has constructed an inspirational diorama entitled The End of the World. This is Daniel’s first Pirate themed creation and only his second MOC that isn’t castle-themed.

Daniel tells us, “I wanted to make a small pirate MOC so I wouldn't have to tear down my latest castle. I like sailing and wanted to make a ship, but I don't have any pirate pieces and I used most of my brown tiles in my castle, so I had to make it small. I got the idea of a ship falling from the earth, since people used to think that the earth was flat, and that they would fall off if they would sail too far.” Daniel said it took him one evening to make the ship and another to build the rest. He estimates that his creation contains around 500 elements.

Daniel is a 16 year-old who has been playing with LEGO since he was old enough to play with DUPLO. He got into the online community when he discovered Classic-Castle.com and Lowlug as he was searching for more pictures of the 2007 castle line. Daniel is mostly a Castle builder but his favourite Pirate set is the Black Seas Barracuda.

Weekly Set Review: Black Sea's Barracuda
Ben E. 3 VIII 08

Join the weekly Forbidden Cove set review discussion. Please post your opinions on the set play ability, piece selection, design, etc. Which sets stand up to our broadside of critique and which ones sink in shame!

This week’s set is 6285 Black Seas Barracuda.

Black Seas Barracuda was released in 1989 for the Pirates. Sail the high seas with the captain, seven pirates, and a monkey. This first large pirate ship includes two cargo hold areas, two cannon, captains quarters with angled stern wall, masts, crane, row boat, rudder, and an anchor. Various accessories such as a treasure map, lanterns, flags, and weapons are included.

Always a fan favorite, Black Seas Barracuda was the most requested set on LEGO.com to be released again. This true Lego Legend was produced for the second time in 2002 as set 10040.

Redoubt
Ben E. 1 VIII 08

A redoubt is an independent fortification without bastions that supports a larger fortification. This type of structure was used in European and North American forts.

One example is a pair of redoubts built by the British at Fort Niagara in 1764. Small cannon mounted on the upper level could fire grape shot at advancing Indian warriors who lacked cannon. These strong points housed soldiers, stored weapons and powder, and provided a last point of defense. This was needed as the original earthen fort walls with wooden palisades, originally built by the French, were extremely large and continually prone to erosion.

Redoubts are transitional structures from medieval to colonial fortifications. This tradition would continue in blockhouses built for various western forts on the great lakes and great plains. As long as the opponent lacked heavy artillery, this type of tower was effective.

The lower walls of my moc of the South Redoubt needed to be tapered to match the original building. I accomplished this by using snot construction and studs turned on their sides. Certain details such as windows, wooden shutters on upper level, and the brick chimney were not completed in time for the BrickWorld display, but I hope to complete these as well.
